Uganda’s Legal Community: Embracing Innovation in the Fight Against Transnational Crime
The New Law Year opening ceremony in Kampala served as a poignant reminder of the challenges facing Uganda’s legal community in the 21st century. President Museveni’s address highlighted the need for adaptation and innovation to confront the growing threat posed by transnational crimes such as money laundering, terrorism financing, and wildlife trafficking.
Vice President Jessica Alupo, delivering the President’s message, emphasized the importance of equipping judicial officers and law enforcement agencies with the tools and resources needed to combat these sophisticated offenses. She called for a proactive approach that embraces technological advancements and fosters collaboration among various stakeholders.
Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo echoed these sentiments, stressing the judiciary’s pivotal role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring access to justice for all citizens. Despite the progress made in recent years, Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo acknowledged the challenges facing Uganda’s legal sector, including limited resources and capacity constraints. He called for greater support from the government and other stakeholders to address these challenges and strengthen the country’s legal infrastructure.
Bernard Oundo, President of the Uganda Law Society, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and collective action in promoting accountability and safeguarding the rights of all citizens. He called for a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of crime and inequality, while also advocating for meaningful legal reforms.
