Charles Muhangi Receives Posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards

The late Ugandan motorsport icon Charles Muhangi has been honored posthumously with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards for September 2024. Muhangi, who passed away in 2018, holds the remarkable distinction of being the only Ugandan to have won the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) in 1999, a record that remains unbroken.

The award was accepted by his widow, Petience Muhangi, during the ceremony held on October 8, 2024, at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo. Muhangi’s contribution to motorsport remains a significant part of Uganda’s sports history, and this award further cements his lasting legacy.

Football: Herbert Assimwe Named Footballer of the Month

Herbert Assimwe, a standout forward for Wakiso Giants, was named Footballer of the Month for September 2024. His crucial goals, including a brace against Maroons, and strikes against Mbale Heroes and Brightstars, made him the top performer.

Assimwe also shined in the Airtel Masaza Cup, netting two more goals for Buwekula, which earned him the award ahead of Said Mayanja from KCCA FC and Enock Ssebagala from NEC FC.

In his acceptance speech, Assimwe said, “This award is the result of hard work, and I dedicate it to my team, the Purple Sharks, at Wakiso Giants.”

Boxing sensation Herbert Matovu claimed the Boxer of the Month title for September 2024, following his impressive knockout victory against Tanzania’s Kheri Mbaruku. The fight, part of the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) regional title bout held at YMCA on September 7, 2024, was decided in the first round, with Matovu delivering a swift knockout.

His victory earned him the award ahead of fellow contenders Ukasha Matovu and Owen Kibira, cementing his position as one of Uganda’s top boxing talents.

Woodball: Isaac Ariho Leads Uganda Prisons to Woodball League Title

In the Woodball category, Isaac Ariho won Player of the Month for his role in guiding Uganda Prisons to their third consecutive Woodball League championship. Ariho displayed dominance throughout September, winning six out of seven matches, including a 7-0 victory over Fred Turyakira and key wins against Simon Peter Otim and Delick Ankunda at the final outing held at Makerere University.

Ariho’s prowess extended to doubles matches, where he teamed up with Abednego Okello and Isaac Nabugere to secure additional wins over top-ranked pairs from KIU and KU.
